Message features
Photos, view-once photos, video, voice messages, stickers, GIFs, replies, reactions, editing and translation.
What you can send
The attach button next to the text box opens these options:
- Camera and Gallery: send a photo or video. You can add a caption to photos.
- View-once photo: turn on view once before sending; the other person can open the photo a single time, then it disappears.
- Voice recording: voice messages up to 2 minutes.
- GIF: search for a GIF or pick your own from your gallery.
- Sticker: big animated emoji. A single emoji sent on its own also shows up large and animated.
What you can do with messages
Press and hold a message to open the menu:
- Reply: answer with the message quoted. Swiping the message to the right does the same, and tapping the quote jumps to the original.
- React: respond with an emoji. Double-tapping a message drops a quick ❤️.
- Copy and Report.
- Edit: change your own plain text message or photo caption; it's then marked "edited".
- Recall: remove your own message from the chat; "Message recalled" appears in its place.
- Translate: translate a message into your language. Message translation is part of Premium and above; without it, you get a limited number of trial uses.
Read, typing and online status
- The ticks under your messages show whether they've been read.
- While the other person is typing, typing… appears at the top, along with their online or last-seen status.
- To hide your own online status and last seen, turn off Show my online status in Settings › Privacy.
If a new message arrives while you're reading older ones, the chat doesn't jump; tap the arrow in the bottom-right corner to go to the latest. Use Chat Appearance to change the chat's colors (Plus and above).
