Read Aloud (listening to books)

Read Aloud reads a chapter out loud with your device's text-to-speech engine. Listen on the go, while doing chores or when your eyes need a break.

How to start

1. Open a chapter and tap the menu icon at the top right.
2. Choose Read Aloud.
3. Press play. The paragraph being read is highlighted on screen.

While you listen, a small player stays at the bottom of the screen so you can pause or resume.

Speed

Use the Reading speed slider in the player to set the speed anywhere from 0.5x to 2.0x.

Listening in the background

In the Android app, listening continues when you switch to another app or lock your screen. A player appears in your notifications. When you come back to the same chapter, you pick up from the paragraph where you stopped.

Which plan do I need?

Read Aloud is unlimited on Plus and above (Plus, Premium, Elite, Elite+). Without a plan you can try it a few times for free; a try is only used when playback actually starts.

Good to know

• The voice comes from your device's own text-to-speech engine, so quality and language support depend on your phone. If there's no sound, check the text-to-speech engine and language data in your phone settings.
• If you've translated the chapter, Read Aloud reads the translation in that language. See Translation.
• Starting to listen to a chapter marks it as read.
